When I began taking photographs of the martial art
of Yong Tjun I was fascinated by the grace of its movements. I set out
to take a series of close-ups as a study of this elegance accentuated
by light, but when I worked on the images in the darkroom I realized
that there was more.
I call the resulting piece a sentence in
photographs not only because the gestures remind me of sign language,
but also because the isolated movements speak so eloquently of the
beauty and wisdom behind this ancient art. In this respect, the piece
has also become the illustration of my conviction that photography is
the highest and most intuitive form of artistic communication.
Please see for yourself.
