I met the members of Rujeko Performance
Collaboration in the summer of 1997 in San Francisco, California. They
were preparing a month-long project with performances to take place
twice a week, alternating between the woods of Marine County and
downtown San Francisco, and they asked me to document this piece with
my camera.
The performance incorporated dance, instrumental
music, singing and poetry, usually within a sacred circle that was
marked by twigs. Very quickly, my role morphed from that of a mere
photographer recording the piece to a participant. The rhythm of my
camera’s shutter became music as well and I felt completely
immersed in that surreal environment that Rujeko created.
These photographs give an idea of the energy that
developed while taking this primeval piece from the woods into the
city.
